Liposuction explained

Liposuction is sometimes also known as lipoplasty, liposculpture or suction lipectomy. Liposuction is a form of cosmetic surgery where fat is removed from parts of the body. Sometimes this fat is transplanted into other areas of the body to improve the overall shape of the silouhette.

Exercise and dieting are the best way to lose weight however there can be stubborn pockets of fat which do not want to shift. These pockets of fat are prime candidates for liposuction as they remove the fat cells. However, liposuction should not be used as a weight-loss method.

There are limits on how much fat can be removed in one session of liposuction. Too much fat removal can leave the patient with lumpy, uneven fat distribution under the skin.

As with any surgery, liposuction carries some risk of complications. These include
- burns
- DVT (deep bein thrombosis)
- damage to the skin
- lumpy appearance to the skin after liposuction surgery
- infection around the wounds
- allergic reaction to the anestheritc
- fluid imbalance
