Travel insurance is a special type of insurance. Travel insurance is intended to cover the traveller against financial losses which may be incurred whilst travelling, either within their own country or whilst they are abroad.
Travel insurance can sometimes be arranged at the time of booking the holiday, or travel insurance can sometimes be purchased through another company. Travel insurance can be bought for one trip, or for mulitple trips. Travel insurance can be bought from many different companies including travel agents, travel insurance specialists, or travel suppliers.
The most common risks covered by travel insurance are:
- cancellation
- Curtailment
- Delayed departure
- Loss, theft or damage to personal possessions and money (including travel documents)
- Delayed baggage (and emergency replacement of essential items)
- Medical expenses
- Emergency evacuation/repatriation
- Overseas funeral expenses
- Accidental death orinjury
- Legal aid

- Loss of income
If you know you are going on a high-risk holiday such as action sports or because you are travelling to a high risk country, or you have a pre-existing medical conditon, you may have to take out specialist travel insurance.
