Air Compressors

Air compressors are mechanical devices which increase the pressure of a gas by reducing it’s volume. When a gas is compressed, it’s temperature will also increase.

Air compressors are used in a variety of places - in aircraft to ensure that atmosphere in the aeroplane is breathable and the air pressure is higher than that of the outside world; in jet engines to ensure that there is a high enough concentration of oxygen for cobustion of the fuel and air mixture; to power pneumatic tools (such as the hand diggers you often see workmen using to dig up the roads); in turbos and superchargers in cars to increase the performance of the engine (by concentrating the oxygen in the air), to name but a few uses.
