GPS Explained

GPS is short for ‘Global Positioning System’. It is a worldwide radio-navigation system which was originally developed by the United States’ Department of Defence for military purposes. However today, it’s use is far wider spread in everyday use. GPS systems are now so accurate that they can be used up to accuracies of 100 metres.

GPS is now most often used in civilian use in cars. The GPS has a big map of the country with all roads mapped. The GPS will be able tell wherever the car is and on what road, direction and speed the automobile is travelling at. The GPS is often combined with route finding software so that the software will guide the driver to where they want to go. Some GPS systems also warn the user if they break local speed limits, and some will also point out the location of static speed cameras to ensure the driver is being extra-vigilant about their speed.
